National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia opened a new regional route connecting Kuala Namu International Airport in North Sumatra with Nagan Raya Airport in Meulaboh, Aceh, on Monday.
Garuda vice president of communications Pujobroto said that a French-Italian turboprop ATR 72-600 aircraft, which can carry 70 passengers, would serve the route.
“We will fly from Kuala Namu to Nagan Raya four times a week-Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,” Pujobroto told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
“The opening of this route also shows our commitment to enhancing air connectivity in the western part of Indonesia and helping the government develop the tourism sector.”
Meulaboh is famous for its beautiful beaches such as Suak Ribee and Lhok Bubon.
With the Medan–Meulaboh flight service, Garuda is now providing 25 flights weekly to and from the Aceh province.
Pujobroto added that the airline had plans to connect Kuala Namu with two more points in Aceh, Lhokseumawe and Sabang, this month.
“We will link Medan and Lhokseumawe on Feb. 4 and Sabang on Feb. 6,” he continued.
